Wi-Fi provides secure and reliable connectivity to computers and phones, which have a comfortable user interface. However, there is another class of devices with either no or limited user interface, such as doorbells, thermostats, garage door openers and lights, which are also managed using Wi-Fi. Onboarding such devices to secure Wi-Fi networks can be cumbersome and prone to user mistakes and many points of failures.

To automatize this process, the Wi-Fi Alliance has created the EasyConnect™ specification and certification that provides a simple and secure method to join to Wi-Fi networks, and onboard devices.

In this project, WBA will study the impact of the Wi-Fi Alliance’s EasyConnect™ specification when applied to the IoT reality, particularly in terms of how it can facilitate the onboarding of devices in an IoT environment, technical considerations to have in mind when deploying this solution, and how to guarantee interoperability with other networks or type of radio access technologies.

  • Provide recommendations with end-to-end test plan for service providers.
