yoctoComm Communication Solutions is an Israeli startup company developing its patent- pending Femto-on-the-GoTM SW-only clients, who will provide the best in-class Cellular Services over Wi-Fi, especially where Cellular service is marginal.
Our ecosystem role is Wi-Fi & Cellular convergence while minimizing operator impact, and maximizing user Quality of Experience (QoE).
The main driver for Carrier Wi-Fi is making the user experience as transparent as possible regardless of the underlying Radio Access Technology (RAT) which is running behind the scenes.
The first phase is automating of the discovery and authentication in a similar fashion like Cellular, which is being dealt by the NGH/PasspointTM initiatives.
The next phase is enabling true Seamless Session Transfer (SST) between Cellular & Wi-Fi access points, while keeping Cellular-grade privacy and security. Here, we propose our Femto-on-the-GoTM clients, which will employ Soft-Handovers in 3G and RAN-based handovers in LTE, through an IPSec tunnel.
It seems that “Wi-Fi Calling” for Voice/SMS services and Licensed Assisted Access (LAA) / LTE + Wi-Fi Link Aggregation (LWA) for Carrier Aggregation (CA) Data services will be a major focus for the foreseeable future.
Naturally, LTE in Unlicensed band (LTE-U) will continue to be a highly sensitive topic, and it remains to be seen whether it will be allowed by the regulators where Listen Before Talk (LBT) is not mandatory.
Here, we propose our Femto-on-the-GoTM clients, which will employ LBT, similar to LAA/LWA. However, it will use the Wi-Fi APs already deployed without changes.
Through our membership with the WBA, we are hoping to get exposure to the ecosystem, have added value in the emerging ”Wi-Fi Calling” standards, and establish strategic partnerships with Mobile Device vendors as well as various types of network operators, e.g. MNOs, MVNOs, Cable & Wi-Fi Internet Service Providers (WISPs).
