Guatemala will be the first Central American country with thousands of Wayfree Wi-Fi hotspots installed on lampposts across 300+ municipalities powered by Wefi’s seamless and automatic connectivity solution – providing free fast internet access to millions of citizens and visitors

May 20, 2021LOS ANGELES, CA—Wefi, a market leader in Wi-Fi connectivity, mobile data collection, and big data analytics, today announced a new partnership with Central American internet service provider Wayfree to expand freemium internet access in Guatemala as part of the country’s Smart Cities Development project. The combined effort will leverage Wefi’s WeConnect Connection Manager solution and Wayfree’s freemium and secure internet connectivity to improve the lives of Guatemalans through technology.

The rapid urbanization process observed in parts of Central America has created a challenge to deliver Wi-Fi broadband access across all communities. According to Inter-American Development Bank, the number of people using the internet in the region has grown from zero to 58 percent in the past 30 years. This push towards digitalization and the need for affordable broadband services will continue to grow exponentially in the years to come.

“Internet access is a human right,” said Wayfree CEO, Sergio X. Plaza. “We must come together and develop creative yet practical solutions to capture those left out, not just for their economic sake, but for the benefit of our great country as a whole. Ours is a country project. We also have a presence in El Salvador and soon in Honduras. Our mission is connecting all the municipalities of Central America and turning it into a connected region.”

With the challenges of COVID-19, resources such as easily accessible Wi-Fi is essential to making Guatemala a safer and more prosperous country to live in. Having broadband internet access can enhance the daily life of an individual by providing access to employers, doctors, education, family, and friends.

“In the long run, offering Wi-Fi countrywide will result in better city planning, the possibility of implementing e-government solutions, and improved access to internet services – all of which will make the country a safer, cleaner, and “smarter” place for all,” said Enrique Cossich, Presidential Commissioner of Comisión Presidencial de Gobierno Abierto y Electrónico  (Presidential Commission for Open and Electronic Government).

WayFree is licensed to deploy Wi-Fi routers on lighting poles in 340 cities and together with Wefi’s Find Free Wi-Fi application and WeConnect Connection Manager solution, it provides seamless and automatic connectivity to WayFree Ads powered Wi-Fi and to free Amenity Wi-Fi across Guatemala with a mission statement to expand the service to all of Central America.
