The Wireless Broadband Alliance is comprised of members who have come together to achieve a common goal: delivering an outstanding user experience through next-generation Wi-Fi. We’re very proud to introduce you to these members, and give you a glimpse into their role within the WBA and the Wi-Fi ecosystem.

This week, we’re profiling iBwave – Benoit Fleury, VP of Products & Innovation, and Nathalie Robitaille, VP of Marketing, were kind enough to provide us with answers to the following questions:

Tell us about iBwave, and its role within the Wi-Fi ecosystem.

iBwave’s focus is on in-building wireless systems, which include Wi-Fi, cellular, public safety, and other technologies. We were founded in 2003, and today, 12 years later, we serve over 700 customers in 87 different countries. Our software suite empowers operators and system integrators to provide optimal network coverage and capacity inside buildings, which is where 80% of all wireless traffic typically occurs.

What do you see as being the hot topics in Wi-Fi over the next 12 months?

First of all, Wi-Fi operating either as a standalone solution or working alongside cellular systems to provide a seamless user experience, no matter the location, is always at the forefront of the industry. Additionally, mobile and wireless coverage inside of buildings – be it a large venue such as a stadium, or a small office building – is approaching the status of being a must-have utility. Whenever a new building is constructed, it’s expected that strong, fast Wi-Fi will be available.

Why has being a member of the WBA been beneficial to iBwave?

When it comes to cellular and Wi-Fi, iBwave’s pedigree comes from a planning and design standpoint. If the planning and design of these networks isn’t done properly, it can become very chaotic – not necessarily for coverage, but often in terms of data throughput and capacity. This is especially true for Wi-Fi, because we’re dealing with unlicensed spectrum, where interference can be a very big challenge. Being a member of the WBA would allow us to raise awareness of this and contribute in any way that we can to make sure that these networks are seamless and provide the best experience possible for end-users. And, of course, we want to connect and importantly learn from other members and providers in the industry.

Why would you recommend becoming a WBA member to other companies?

Any company should be looking to contribute to the industry in any way that they can, and when the industry works together, it moves forward. The WBA gives companies the opportunity to network and work together, and participating in such a forum provides the opportunity to educate and be educated. It creates a real sense of community and makes sure that the industry is evolving in the right direction.
