Those looking to travel across France will soon benefit from the installation of free Wi-Fi at 40 of the country’s busiest train stations, it has been announced.
The Wi-Fi network is due to be installed in time for the summer in a bid to improve the service of France’s state-owned rail company, SNCF.
The rail company is also aiming to bring Wi-Fi to an additional 128 of its 3000 stations by February 2015. After this, SNFC has said that it will look to continue its roll-out at an additional 30 stations in the greater Paris area.
It was also revealed that the cost of running thie Wi-Fi would be met by selling advertising to companies, as users will have to watch a short advert before being able to access the free service.
According to connexionfrance.com, free Wi-Fi is already available at a limited number of the nation’s train stations, but this mass installation of the service will be a first for Europe.
Rachel Picard, who is responsible for the running of the SNFC stations, told thelocal.fr that the key element of the project is that it would be 100 per cent free for those using the trains.
Ms Picard said: “We couldn’t put any additional cost on the stations; the system had to finance itself.”
