PROJECT DESCRIPTION

TRENDS AND OPPORTUNITIES

The Wi-Fi Alliance’s Passpoint® specification (PPS-MO) aims to standardize profile management, but OS vendors have introduced variations, offering an opportunity to refine and enhance the consistency of profile formats. This diversity allows operators and IDPs to explore more flexible solutions tailored to different device structures.

Users have the opportunity to gain more control over Passpoint® profiles, enabling them to view, prioritize, and delete profiles, while addressing challenges like carrier or ANDSF/ANDSP profiles and “sticky” profiles to enhance management flexibility. Additionally, there are opportunities to create a unified Passpoint® profile format to simplify deployment and collaborate with OS vendors and other Standards Development Organizations to standardize profiles across devices, improving the overall user experience.

BUSINESS & MARKET BENEFITS

As Passpoint® deployment accelerates, addressing user access and standardizing profile formats becomes critical. Resolving these issues will enhance user experience, streamline operations, and boost market competitiveness.

The project focuses on two areas: user access to Passpoint® profiles and standardizing the profile format. We will assess user control over profiles- visibility, prioritization, and deletion- and define a standardized format for operators and IDPs. By collaborating with stakeholders and device vendors, we can deliver solutions that improve efficiency, user satisfaction, and industry-wide standardization, driving significant business benefits.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES

  • Develop industry guidelines and define requirements for Passpoint® user features and profile formats, establishing liaisons with relevant working groups and organizations.
  • Determine OS and device vendor support for implementing and onboarding a standardized Passpoint® profile format.
  • Measure success by identifying key topics, achieving positive outcomes, and agreeing on actionable next steps.
  • Engage operators, IDPs, and OS/device vendors to assess user control over Passpoint® profiles (view, prioritize, delete).Evaluate operator and IDP support for a standardized, cross-device Passpoint® profile format.
