Kuala Lumpur, February 14, 2013 – Greenpacket, a leading developer of next generation mobile broadband and networking solutions, continues its leadership in Wi-Fi QoS with breakthrough advancement in Intelligent Network Selection and Seamless Network Roaming via the Signal Assisted Switching methodology. The patent pending methodology reinforces the importance of Wi-Fi experience in mobile data offloading.
The Signal Assisted Switching methodology in mobile data offloading enhances user experience by ensuring the device will only connect to a Wi-Fi AP when supported by a high quality Wi-Fi signal. The Wi-Fi radio control can be made more precise in relation to the user experience which makes relevant seamless network roaming between 3G-Wi-Fi in the wider mobile data offloading strategy.
Wi-Fi QoS essentially works by encouraging the intelligent use of Wi-Fi hotspot and handles the seamless handover from network to network between Wi-Fi and 3G and vice-versa through a software device-client which is capable of verifying Wi-Fi radio, signal strength threshold analysis, stable timer hysteresis, location prioritized APs, aggregating information from Wi-Fi APs and crowd-sourced information from users to get data on the performance of hotspots prior to switching.
Kelvin Lee, Senior General Manager of Greenpacket said, “Operators and end-users are confronted with rising costs of mobile data usage. With more than 90% of smartphones which are Wi-Fi capable in the market today, it is no surprise Wi-Fi usage is climbing. Wi-Fi QoS is thus important to ensure great user experience and maximize savings for subscribers. With the right attachment and prioritization to the right Wi-Fi hotspots, whether by operator or partner means it can significantly diminish the mistake of switching users to a worse connection and can now guarantee its subscribers satisfactory.”
Lee added that, “Wi-Fi QoS opens door to mobility driven market needs as the theme of mobility plays out in emerging heterogeneous networks and roaming abilities. Furthermore, Wi-Fi connections are still faster than most mobile broadband options, especially when traveling; paying for Wi-Fi is often cheaper than mobile broadband. I believe that good governance of Wi-Fi QoS embodies the true meaning of Wi-Fi roaming. ”
Wi-Fi QoS is currently tested in beta groups of networks in North America and would be more widely available in the next 6 – 12 months with gaining interests also in Europe and Asia Pacific. Greenpacket will be at the 2013 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain from 25th February to 28th February. Representatives from Greenpacket will be available to meet and discuss this solution and others upon request.
