“Super-Wi-Fi” is heading to 500 U.S colleges and universities.
The new Wi-Fi, which offers a much bigger range than traditional hotspots, will be ready to be implemented imminently.
Ndtv.com reports that the technology makes use of a different part of the Wi-Fi spectrum, normally reserved for local television networks.
It was created by Declaration Networks – a company working to try and improve wireless networks in rural and unserved areas.
Speaking to timesofindia.com, the body’s chief executive suggested the technology could provide a significant step forward for educational institutions in the United States.
He said: “We are excited to be accelerating the implementation of next generation networks in educational communities by creating this nationwide sustainable program that will deploy high capacity broadband networks leveraging White Spaces.”
The technology was created as part of the AIR.U initiative – a scheme created with the aim of making better use of the gaps in the United States’ wireless spectrum.
It will be rolled out slowly and it is believed that residents in communities near to these educational institutions could sign up to make use of the service as well.
Companies from Brazil and the United Kingdom have also shown interest in using the technology.
