First Great Western (FGW) has announced it will extend its free Wi-Fi service to commuters travelling in the UK on its sleeper and high-speed trains.
According to techienews.co.uk, FGW will be installing all high-speed and Night Riviera trains with networking equipment some time around May next year. All commuters should have access to the service by the end of next year but some trains will provide the service from as early as June.
FGW’s managing director, Mark Hopwood, commented that the free Wi-Fi trials conducted on its class 180 trains went very well, which is why they’re rolling out the service further.
“I am delighted that we are able to extend this free service and within the next year all high speed and sleeper fleet customers will be able to read their emails, browse the web, or simply catch up with friends while on the move,” he said.
For the time being, FGW customers can access The Cloud’s Wi-Fi service at various FGW stations across the UK, reports uswitch.com.
Wi-Fi services have become increasingly popular with rail passengers in the UK in recent years. For example, London Underground passengers can currently access Virgin Media’s Wi-Fi service within train carriages and The Cloud offers a similar service at London Underground stations.
