HSBC is now offering free Wi-Fi to its customers in hundreds of its UK banks, so staff can teach people how to use its mobile banking service.

According to v3.co.uk, Carl Howard, head of digital at HSBC UK, explains that staff members are now able to demo its mobile banking app to customers, as well as new service Paym.

“We’ve been listening to our customers about how we can make banking easier for them and they tell us they like the idea of mobile banking, but in some cases would value being shown how it works,” he states.

Research from BT and Avaya shows that 49 per cent of banking customers believe that free Wi-Fi would make a big positive difference to their time spent in-branch, reports finextra.com.

The Wi-Fi is provided by BT and customers are able to connect using a mobile device, such as a tablet or smartphone. Although the service is there to help people understand mobile banking, customers are free to use the connection as they wish.

At the moment, free Wi-Fi is available in 650 branches, but if customer feedback is good the service could be rolled out to more stores.

HSBC isn’t the only UK bank to provide free Wi-Fi, as Barclays has been offering a similar service since February 2013.
