PROJECT DESCRIPTION

TRENDS AND OPPORTUNITIES

Determining the Quality of Experience (QoE) on a given Access Network Provider (ANP) location has always been a challenge.  Identity Providers (IdPs) often want insight into QoE to help decide if a roamer should attach to a given location.

A reliable way to offer insight into a network’s QoE can help further the adoption of Passpoint®, by giving IdPs greater confidence in the quality of the networks their users are attaching onto.

The need for QoE metrics also plays a role in the WBA OpenRoaming™.  There is the possibility of many different networks offering roaming, operated by a variety of network operators both small and large.

BUSINESS & MARKET BENEFITS

The 1st phase of ‘Access Network Metrics‘ report initiates the first phase, assessing the need for access network metrics and proposing methods essential for capturing data to evaluate networks, leveraging key indicators to quantify network performance. This phase provides a vital foundation for a more dependable and efficient Wi-Fi ecosystem.

Phase 2 offering a practical blueprint for how service providers, IDPs, and ANPs can seamlessly integrate QoE metrics into their operational models. It defines how service providers, network operators, and technology vendors can collect, standardize, and transmit key Wi-Fi performance metrics.

By extending the RADIUS protocol through enhanced Connect-Info attributes, and introducing structured out-of-band data models, it delivers a practical framework for sharing real-time and historical network quality indicators.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES

Phase 3 demonstrated how Access Network Metrics (ANM) move from defined frameworks and transmission models into real-world, production-scale deployment and validation.

The team is presently under the Phase 4 of work, aiming to standardize the Wi-Fi Quality Metrics to be distributed through RADIUS Connect-Info.

Recently, the team has already seen Connect-Info becoming an integral part of the RADEXT group at IETF, a very promising sign, and is now working on the metrics standardization.

Besides, there’s also ongoing discussions on Phase 5, a plan for 2027. The goal is two-fold:

– Creation of an ANM Interop or Compliance Program to validate accurate deployment and transmission of metrics

– Development of a quality grading mechanism to help IDPs processing the metrics
