Britain will need to conduct significant upgrades to its mobile and Wi-Fi networks if it’s to cope with increased usage of the internet.

The advice comes courtesy of Real Wireless, a leading wireless consultancy firm, who believes that unless improvements are made to networks by 2020, there will not be enough spectrum for mobile devices and computers to operate in an efficient manner.

According to telegraph.co.uk, the group is calling for 300Mhz more spectrum for mobile networks and an increase of 350 MHz for Wi-Fi to help Britain cater for the rising number of devices logging on to the internet.

Real Wireless assisted in the auction of 4G and says the new spectrum freed up by this deal had given Britain some “breathing space” ahead of further explosions in mobile device ownership.

However, professor Simon Saunders, co-founder and technology director at Real Wireless, told capitalbay.com that Britain will encounter problems with its communications networks unless it takes further action.

“The challenge faced by governments and regulators is how best to manage this demand and ensure that consumers and other wireless users continue to see an improvement in their service, while ensuring other critical services still have access to the spectrum they need,” he added.

A recent report from Ofcom highlighted that Britain could boost its mobile data capacity by more than 25 times by 2030 through the introduction of 5G mobile networks.

A number of candidates have come forward to stake their claim as a future mobile broadband provider but a decision is yet to be made.
