Wi-Fi will be available in Glasgow, Scotland for at least the next eight years, thanks to a new partnership agreement between BT and Glasgow City Council.

The city has become the first in Scotland to offer free connectivity in its centre. Between 50 and 80 access points will be installed in the most popular areas, with passengers at transport hubs across the city also benefiting, reports stv.tv. The network will be free to access any time, day or night.

Council leader Gordon Matheson says that 31 community centres will benefit from the free Wi-Fi too.

He explained: “Today is a special day, when Glasgow becomes the first Scottish city to offer free Wi-Fi, further underlining our status as a place willing to use technology to bring social, educational and economic benefits to our residents and businesses.

“Anyone coming to the streets, public spaces and community centres covered by the first stage of this network will be able to take advantage of this innovative, fast and high-quality service.”

The first phase of the scheme will be rolled out just in time for the Commonwealth Games and coverage will be extending in early 2015, reports heraldscotland.com.

Users wanting to log on just need to access the wireless settings on their phones or tablets before selecting the GlasgowCC WiFi option.
