Event organisations cannot expect to satisfy their attendees without allowing them to browse the internet with a fast and free Wi-Fi connection.
These are the words of hospitality expert and 4hoteliers.com contributor Anna Johnson, who says that although the provision of wireless internet was a “nice-to-have” up until very recently, it’s now an absolute necessity for anyone planning an event.
She says that events professionals must familiarise themselves with technological tools in order to organise their gatherings in a more efficient manner.
Ms Johnson says one of the best ways of boosting audience satisfaction is by choosing a venue which can offer free and speedy internet access.
“The prevalence of smartphone ownership means that attendees will want to check their email or surf the internet during an event,” she wrote.
Touching on the promotional side of things, Ms Johnson added: “Free internet will also enable attendees to make internet posts and tweet about the goings on, which can then generate free publicity.”
On the other hand, if internet access cannot be found, crowds of attendees may leave the venue in a bid to find a connection somewhere else.
Corbinball.com writer Ian Framson adds that a poor Wi-Fi signal can be frustrating for an attendee. However, for an event which relies on technology to function, this could create a catalogue of problems.
Mr Framson says the lack of internet can sink a keynote speech and cripple an exhibitor demo, which is why organisers must ensure their connections are always up to speed.
