Passpoint networks require subscription profiles, and OpenRoaming aims to provide seamless and secure connections for various devices. The Federated Onboarding Service enhance the onboarding user experience by providing a widely available onboarding solution, which will improve OpenRoaming adoption and create business opportunities.

On the other hand, the Passpoint specification faced challenges such as lack of adoption by major devices and cost complexities for operators. While the smartphone ecosystem has seen success with application-based provisioning of Passpoint credentials, non-smartphone devices require easy adoption options.

The Federated Onboarding Service by OpenRoaming offers an accessible solution to all participants without requiring individual service providers, identity providers, or device vendors to deploy a standalone Online Sign-Up service. By removing the dependency for every IDP to provide their own onboarding solution, the Federated Onboarding Service aims to increase the number of devices provisioned for OpenRoaming and boost uptake of the service across the ecosystem.

The Federated Onboarding Service Project has reached its first milestone with the completion of the Marketing Requirements Document (MRD). The MRD defines the use cases, requirements, and interoperability scope, as well as the testing schedule.

In the next phase of the Federated Onboarding Service Project, WBA will explore the opportunity to pre-provision devices with “Remote Advanced Sign-up.” This will complement existing application-based market offerings and create a more streamlined onboarding experience. The focus will be on defining and specifying the technical framework and best practices for the Federated Onboarding Service, which can be implemented on various devices and deployed by OpenRoaming industry players.
