More than half a million people will be able to access the internet for free whilst the World Cup is on in Brazil, thanks to a new partnership between two telecoms companies.

According to policychargingcontrol.com, Brazilian mobile operator Oi and Canadian firm Redknee Solutions will offer the free Wi-Fi service to 600,000 tourists as part of a new campaign.

Lucas Skoczowski, CEO of Redknee, said the firm is “proud” to work alongside Oi and states that football fans will be able to enjoy a “great multimedia experience” during the World Cup.

Eduardo Aspesi, Oi’s segments director, added that Redknee was chosen because it offers a solution that’s ready to use and very flexible.

“As the largest sporting event in the world, the football World Cup represents an exciting opportunity for Oi to welcome many football fans to Brazil and provide them with exceptional service including free Wi-Fi,” he said.

Service users will be able to seamlessly move between Wi-Fi and cellular connections, as Redknee’s end-to-end solution transitions the user based on operator policies, subscriber profile, the congestion level of each channel and the applications being used, reports newswire.ca.

Oi also offers pre-paid mobile kits to tourists visiting Brazil especially for the World Cup. These allow them to gain access to more than 600,000 Wi-Fi hotspots across the country.
