This week, commuters waiting at Cape Town Station will have access to free Wi-Fi and there are plans to extend the service to train carriages too.

According to businesstech.co.za, Cape Town won’t be the only station to receive free Wi-Fi access. Next, the service will be extended to all stations on the southern line from Cape Town to Muizenberg.

Metrorail says it will cover the implementation cost of the service. Two months ago the operator received R233 million to upgrade its service, as it still gets many complaints from customers regarding train delays and security, reports iol.co.za.

Once the Wi-Fi service is rolled out to train carriages, customers will be able to use a new Metrorail mobile app to check the status of the train they’re on. For example, if the train suddenly stops, the app will inform them why. Customers will also be aware of any incidents which might impact their journey, Metrorail Western Cape manager Mthuthulezi Swartz explained.

“We will of course limit commuters to a certain amount of megabytes,” he says. “If commuters want more they would have to buy more megabytes.

“For now we are only implementing this in the southern region because it’s the shortest distance from Cape Town. This is a pilot project, so we will roll this out to other regions as far as possible.”
