Residents and visitors in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will soon be able to benefit from free Wi-Fi, as the service will be rolled out across 100 important locations in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

According to gulfnews.com, parts of Dubai already have free Wi-Fi available, including downtown. This service was provided by developer Emaar in collaboration with the telecoms provider, du. Moreover, just last month the service was rolled out in Dubai Silicon Oasis to the Cedre Shopping Centre and the Semmer Villas community centre.

Now, du has launched a new free Wi-Fi project, called Wi-Fi UAE, and it’s hoped the provision of internet access will improve the quality of local residents’ lives.

The rollout will start immediately in Dubai and Abu Dhabi and eventually the whole of the UAE will have access to free internet access, reports emirates247.com.

Not only will residents be able to keep in contact with each other using the service, visitors can look up vital tourist information and find out further information about the UAE’s most popular attractions.

Ahmad Bin Byat, chairman at du, says UAE cities have the potential to become top global competitors in a year’s time thanks to the rollout of this project.

“Time and again we have seen that progressive cities evolve – enabling their residents to use time more efficiently,” he explains. “In today’s times, a key enabler in joining these pieces together is telecom technology.

“Benchmarking ourselves against the best worldwide and guided by the tenets set forth by the leadership of this country, we are proud to announce ‘Wi-Fi UAE’ that will touch the lives of everyone in the UAE in the way envisioned by our leaders.”
