Spanish Wi-Fi provider GOWEX is set to bring a free wireless internet network to the city of Edinburgh, reports scotsman.com.

Local reports suggest the provision of Wi-Fi represents a key part of Edinburgh council’s plans to continue the growth of its economy, with an emphasis on making the service free to use.

Councillors are set to place their faith in wireless internet to encourage people to spend more time and money in the likes of Leith, Gorgie and Morningside.

Each mobile user will be granted free access 24 hours a day with no interruptions.

Although the very first installations will be made in the city centre, GOWEX hopes to have covered most areas of the city by the start of summer – just in time for its August festivals.

A ten-year contract for operating the network has been drawn up and will be presented to the council’s finance and resources committee on Thursday (March 20).

Economy convener and councillor Frank Ross described the deal as a “fantastic” result for Edinburgh, backing the network to provide a “great service” to residents whilst adding to the visitor experience.

Ken Hay, chair of Festivals Edinburgh, told news.stv.tv: “This new service will not only boost access to the shows and information we provide, but also allow visitors to fully share their own unique experiences on social media, enhancing the profile of Edinburgh around the globe as a must-see destination.”
