Wi-Fi is growing worldwide as an important offload strategy for mobile operators.  This is evident with the recent announcement by Aptilo Networks that two of Taiwan’s top three  tier-1 mobile operators deployed Aptilo’s Wi-Fi service to offload their 3G networks and new research from analyst firm, Ovum.

Taiwan’s top three tier-1 operators are deploying Wi-Fi in public areas where data consumption through their 3G networks is in strong demand. Wi-Fi will complement their existing 3G services so users can enjoy a complete wireless experience, including the fast data speeds and convenience of Wi-Fi.  There is great opportunity for mobile operators to monetize the bandwidth capacity crunch as these mobile operators are doing.

Additionally, the new survey from Ovum reveals that wireless operators have their hands full with concerns over the rapid growth of mobile broadband traffic, so many are beginning to look beyond the negative revenue implications of Wi-Fi.   The majority of operators surveyed expect to work with other hotspot providers to build out their network footprint. And they are willing to work with what they call “untrusted” or “non-controlled” Wi-Fi networks – for example, free public networks that aren’t controlled by an operator, such as those found at hotels or libraries.   In addition, over 90 per cent are also looking for a device-based policy solution that selects the best network – be it 3G, 4G or wifi – based on cost, performance, and other policy-driven features.
