Video content will account for the vast majority (79 per cent) of all global web traffic in 2018, a new report from Cisco predicts.

According to the Cisco Visual Networking Index , a surge in the demand for data-intensive 4K video will drive significant traffic growth over the next four years. The report even suggests that internet users will consume more data in 2018 than in all of the 30 years leading up to 2013 combined.

The report covers a number of current trends and talks about the parts they may play in internet traffic growth over the next few years, toptechnews.com reports. Cisco predicts, for example, that wireless networks will carry 75 per cent of all internet traffic, with the accessibility of public Wi-Fi on the up.

It also suggests that the majority of all web visits will come from non-PC hardware, such as smartphones and tablets. According to business-cloud.com, just 39 per cent of traffic will be generated by wired devices like desktop computers, with the remaining 61 per cent coming from mobile devices. This figure is up from 51 per cent in 2013.

The influence of the Internet of Things (IoT) will grow slowly over the next few years too; it is expected to account for two per cent of all traffic by the end of the four-year forecast period.
