AI-driven Edge Intelligence Analyzes and Optimizes Network Conditions Directly Within the Router Enables Intelligent Home Networks That Detect and Respond to Network Issues Before Users Experience Service Degradation

LG Uplus (https://www.lguplus.com) announced that it has successfully validated an intelligent home networking technology that enables AI to independently analyze and manage internet service quality.

The company demonstrated a Self-Healing home network technology based on a Wi-Fi 8 platform, verifying the capability of Edge AI, where AI analyzes and optimizes network conditions directly on the home router rather than relying on cloud servers.

This proof-of-concept is significant because it confirms the feasibility of an intelligent home network capable of detecting and responding to network anomalies before customers experience noticeable degradation in internet performance.

As demand grows for services requiring fast and reliable connectivity, such as generative AI, extended reality (XR), cloud gaming, and ultra-high-definition IPTV, maintaining stable network quality within the home has become increasingly important. Consequently, AI-powered intelligent home networking technologies that can autonomously monitor and optimize network performance are gaining greater attention.

To validate these capabilities, LG Uplus collaborated with global semiconductor company Broadcom to build an Edge AI-based home networking environment in which AI runs directly on the router.

Broadcom provided a Wi-Fi 8 platform equipped with a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) capable of supporting AI workloads, while LG Uplus optimized and lightweighted its existing AI model for network quality prediction, which had previously operated in the cloud, enabling it to run directly on the router.

Through the demonstration, the two companies confirmed that AI operating on a home router can:

  • Analyze network quality data in real time
  • Detect early signs of network issues before failures occur
  • Optimize network settings when service degradation is anticipated
  • Automatically perform recovery actions to maintain stable service quality

The validation is also noteworthy because it expands the role of the router beyond a simple internet access device into an AI-powered network quality management platform. The results demonstrate that routers can evolve into core devices capable of independently analyzing and managing network conditions.

Building on this achievement, LG Uplus plans to continue validating and advancing a wide range of AI-based technologies that can reliably manage networks in Wi-Fi 8 environments.
