PROJECT DESCRIPTION

TRENDS AND OPPORTUNITIES

Demand for accurate, standardized Wi-Fi location is rising as enterprises, public venues, and emergency services depend on precise indoor positioning.

Prior WBA work on RADIUS signaling, network metrics, and mission-critical services has created a foundation, but fragmented adoption across OS vendors, AP manufacturers, and operators limits scale.

High-accuracy methods such as Fine Time Measurement (FTM) remain inconsistently deployed, while broader IEEE ranging technologies are underutilized.

With growing needs for deterministic, context-aware Wi-Fi, sub-meter accuracy, enhanced emergency capabilities, and expanding OpenRoaming use cases, this project offers a path to unify protocols, align ecosystems, and enable services like navigation, asset tracking, emergency response, and optimized roaming while reducing deployment complexity.

BUSINESS & MARKET BENEFITS

A dedicated Location-Aware Wi-Fi program enables the industry to evaluate and align on emerging positioning technologies, creating unified protocols that reduce fragmentation and accelerate adoption.

By convening OS vendors, chipset makers, device manufacturers, operators, and regulators, WBA can drive a harmonized approach that balances accuracy, privacy, and deployment feasibility.

The program unlocks commercial advantages such as premium location-based services, smarter network operations, improved emergency capabilities, and enhanced customer experiences.

Clear guidance lowers deployment costs, strengthens interoperability, and supports regulatory compliance, enabling faster time-to-market for navigation, analytics, automation, and safety applications across enterprises, public venues, and consumer ecosystems.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES

The project will create a unified framework for Location-Aware Wi-Fi by defining how location data is captured, transmitted, and applied across key use cases.

It will evaluate technologies, close ecosystem gaps, and align vendors, operators, and regulators. The work harmonizes standards, resolves technical and privacy challenges, and enables broad adoption of accurate indoor positioning.

Key Deliverables

A Deployment Guidelines for Location-Aware Wi-Fi detailing industry needs, current status, and a practical roadmap. The work includes technology evaluation, a harmonized standardization approach, and identification of regulatory, privacy, and ecosystem challenges. It also provides recommendations for multi-stakeholder adoption and potential contributions to future industry standards and WBA reference models.
