Some areas of Long Island City will soon benefit from a new free Wi-Fi service.
According to licpost.com, Mayor Michael Bloomberg has announced that Long Island City will receive the free service by the end of the year.
Those who work, or live on, Queens Plaza, Jackson Avenue and Vernon Boulevard will be able to check their email, look at their various social media profiles and browse the internet for free under the new partnership with GOWEX.
Long City Partnership will be running seminars for business owners about the benefits of free Wi-Fi and how it works over the next few weeks in preparation of the launch.
It’s reported that the Wi-Fi program will cost $3,400,000 in private funds and $900,000 in public money. Residents and businesses can expect to access the service from December onwards, reports qchron.com.
Mayor Bloomberg said the Wi-Fi service is vital for supporting local businesses: “If New York is going to remain competitive in the global economy, we must find ways to support the entrepreneurs who are driving technological advances and creating jobs.”
The Wi-Fi service is acting as a pilot program and the access areas will be monitored. If the pilot goes well, other areas in the city will be put under consideration to receive free Wi-Fi too.
