A new study has highlighted just how much mobile users rely on Wi-Fi to keep themselves updated whilst they’re on holiday.
As reported by irishtimes.com, a survey on Irish mobile customers from the European Commission shows that nearly half of holidaymakers will only use the internet to check their emails so long as they’re connected to a Wi-Fi hotspot.
Not only this, a total of 47 per cent said they would never consider using mobile internet whilst in a foreign country.
International data roaming charges have made many smartphone users think twice about checking their social networks and email inboxes or browsing the internet whilst on holiday. However, free wireless connections found in cafés, restaurants and even popular attractions are now helping tourists stay connected to life back home.
Brits aren’t the only ones who have turned to playing it safe when they’re abroad, as siliconrepublic.com says 94 per cent of the 28,000 EU citizens that were questioned by the commission said they limit their use of the internet because of mobile roaming charges.
The EU estimates there has been a 1,500 per cent lift in data roaming across the EU since 2008, but it seems mobile users are now wising up to cheaper methods of accessing the internet.
