Singapore has been named as the country with the best mobile broadband penetration in the world.

The latest edition of the International Telecommunications Union’s State of Broadband report reveals that the Asian island city-state has a higher proportion of mobile web-enabled residents than any other nation.

Japan and Finland were ranked second and third respectively.

According to theregister.co.uk, the report suggested that mobile broadband has become “the fastest growing technology in human history”, presenting a compelling case for businesses across the world to invest in Wi-Fi services for their customers.

It was suggested that mobile broadband subscriptions were growing at 30 per cent a year and that there will be 2.1 billion across the globe by the end of this year. That means mobile broadband subscriptions are likely to outnumber fixed-line broadband subscriptions three times over by the end of this year.

Nevertheless, it was noted that many of the world’s poorest countries still have less than ten per cent broadband penetration.

“The key to unlocking universal service is solid consideration of how to fund the last 5-10 per cent of subscribers, and who should bear these additional costs,” said the report.

Digitaltveurope.net reports that South Korea was found to have the largest proportion of overall broadband connectivity, at 97 per cent.
