City of York Council will soon be able to monitor footfall and how public spaces are used, thanks to a new social Wi-Fi solution being implemented by Purple WiFi.

According to realwire.com, Purple WiFi will be working alongside Pinacl Solutions UK Limited and Ruckus Wireless to deliver the new service to York. The solution won’t only be useful to the council though, as businesses be will able to subscribe to a service which allows them to get to know their customers better. This information will enable them to target discounts and special offers to customers in real time.

The network will consist of 150 access points and will be free to use at all hours of the day, seven days a week. Purple WiFi claims there will be enough bandwidth to stream media. It is expected the network will be completed by 2015, reports recombu.com.

Gavin Wheeldon, CEO of Purple WiFi, says the firm is “delighted” to be delivering the solution to York.

“We are currently experiencing an explosion in interest for city-wide Wi-Fi implementations,” he explains.

“As we see the Internet of Things really begin to take off, the demand for ubiquitous city-wide Wi-Fi is only going to increase, with cities planning everything from how to engage the high street, to directing people in W-Fi enabled cars to the nearest available parking spot.”
