Wilocity, the company creating what it calls the ‘world’s fastest’ wi-fi standard, says its product will be rolled out to both the business and consumer markets.
Speaking to haaretz.com, the vice-president of engineering at Wilocity, Yaron Elboim, says that the standard will reach mobiles eventually, too. Penetration of the latter market will be dependent on pricing, but Elboim is confident that there are no limitations on what his product can do.
“With every generation of the product, capability improves and speed increases,” he reveals. “As soon as you have speed, there’s no end to the applications.”
Operating at 300 gigabits per second, Wilocity says its product is 25 times faster than the best home internet speeds currently available to the worldwide market. This would allow users to download 10 songs in just under 1.5 seconds, or access a two-hour film (in high-definition quality) in 2.2 minutes.
Used in a business environment, the new standard could stop the problem of employees’ internet speed slowing due to the sheer volume of people connected to a network. After testing it out in a real office environment, Elboim boasts: “They go online with almost no restrictions.” More megabits means almost 100 times the speed of regular wi-fi in office environments, Elboim adds.
There is a downside, however – the router and computer must be in the same room in order for users to reap these exceptional speeds. The new standard does not transmit through walls, or beyond a 100-metre radius. Whether or not this will change throughout Wilocity’s work remains to be seen, but if the new speed becomes standard, it’s sure to change the world in a positive way.
