The Greek Prime Minister has promised that the nation will be able to enjoy free Wi-Fi access across the country next year.
According to greekreporter.com, Antonis Samaras announced the plans on an interview televised on Mega TV. He did not reveal much about the Wi-Fi plans; but he did say that the network is already under construction and that everyone would have access to it sometime in 2014.
Although the Wi-Fi access is positive, there has been some mixed responses to the news on social media website Twitter, twitchy.com reports. Many called the plan “surreal” as the announcement has come out of the blue in an interview that was mainly focused on current affairs.
One Twitter user noted that mobile data in Greece is more expensive than using data whilst roaming in the EU – so a free Wi-Fi network would bring a lot of relief to many smartphone owners who don’t want to use their expensive mobile data.
Another suggested the move could have been done to win over young Greeks – as they will have one less bill to pay if they have constant access to free Wi-Fi.
It has also been pointed out that Greece may be attempting to become technology hub – much like Estonia.
