The mobile network Sprint is set to launch a service which will allow users who have certain handsets to send SMS messages and make phone calls for free by using the Wi-Fi networks available to them.

The Wi-Fi Calling feature will initially only be available to customers with a Samsung Galaxy Mega and a Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini from February 21, but the mobile network plans on making it available for other handsets sometime in the future.

This feature is likely to be loved by international travellers who don’t want to face a mammoth bill every time they make a short call to family or friends across the globe.

T-Mobile has been offering this service for a number of years, but Sprint is only the second network to take up the Wi-Fi Calling technology. Mobile news site androidheadlines.com suggests that this is because both of these networks are not known for having the best coverage, so the use of this technology is a solution for some customers in more remote areas.

According to fiercewireless.com, a spokesperson for Sprint said that its customers: “will experience improved voice, data and messaging services in locations that previously had limited or no mobile network coverage.”
