Broadcom’s latest wireless chip for smartphones could make the Wi-Fi speeds on Apple’s iPhone 6 the fastest ever to be achieved by the iOS series, reports businessinsider.com.
Apple has used Broadcom chips in its entire range of Wi-Fi enabled devices and tech analysts believe this relationship will continue when details of the sixth-generation iPhone are announced.
Speculation has mounted over the possibility of the company’s new BCM4354 component powering wireless functions on Apple’s new smart device, allowing the phone to boast faster Wi-Fi than all of its predecessors.
According to a rundown of the chip’s specifications at broadcom.com, BCM4354 can deliver Wi-Fi at twice the speed of the 1×1 MIMO (multiple-input and multiple-output) standard used by many of the current smartphones.
The new chip also increases wireless coverage up to 30 per cent compared to 1×1 MIMO solutions, doubles Wi-Fi performance for video and music downloads whilst boosting power efficiency by 25 per cent.
Broadcom’s updated solution even makes room for some of the best features of the MIMO 1×1. Apple users will now be able to use this technology to switch between several antennas for sending and receiving data, giving them the best chance of finding a strong signal.
Not only this, the chip offers support for Android, Windows and Chrome-based operating systems, meaning it could find its way out of the clutches of Apple in the not too distant future.
The iPhone 6 has been tipped for a release in Autumn of this year.
