The city of Ahmedabad is set to receive free Wi-Fi in eight localities in a bid to make it a smart city, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has announced.
This was revealed to celebrate the city’s 603rd birthday and is part of Gujarat’s ‘e-Nagar’ project, which aims to see 53 towns across the region receive free Wi-Fi in the future.
The chief minister did not make it clear when the new Wi-Fi network is set to be installed or who the project will be carried out by.
The project will also link with the transport system to provide travellers with accurate bus arrival times which will be posted online. The government also intends to create an app for e-governance which will allow residents to pay taxes from their mobile.
According to indiatimes.com, Mr Modi used Skype to announce his latest plans to create a smart city to his assembly constituency of Maninager.
A representative from the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), told dnaindia.com that: “One can access internet at the state locations. All one needs to do is select the wi-fi network, register their mobile number for a one time password and after entering the password, one can access the internet.”
