People travelling through St Pancras station in London can now benefit from Wi-Fi connection speeds of 1GB.
According to whatmobile.net, London St Pancras is the UK’s 13th busiest railway station, so it’s likely that its regular users will appreciate such a huge speed boost. Before phase one of the upgrade project was completed this week, the maximum speed available to passengers was limited to just 200MB.
There are also plans in place to make the Wi-Fi service even faster in the future. Bosses at the station are hoping that speeds will eventually reach 20GB once phase two of the scheme comes into effect later in the year. When this happens, St Pancras will become home to one of the most powerful public Wi-Fi services in Britain.
HS1, the owner of the station, struck a deal with WIFI Metropolis to improve the connection with this target in mind. St Pancras won’t be the only station that receives an upgrade though, as Ashford, Ebbsfleet and Stratford will all be worked on. The hotspots will be free to use too, as they’re to be funded by adverts, reports v3.co.uk.
Wendy Spinks, commercial director of HS1 Ltd, said the boost is needed as more and more people are accessing the service via their mobile devices.
“Whether commuters are rushing to catch a train and want to download the latest film for their journey or find themselves between meetings with nowhere to work from, this new technology will completely change the way visitors can use their time in the station,” she explained.
