Aberdeen is set launch the Accelerate Aberdeen Super Connected Cities programme which will invest money in making the city a more technology friendly place.

The scheme will make £600,000 available, half of which will be invested in the city’s wireless infrastructure and the other half on the boosting the network’s connectivity, recombu.com reports.

Aberdeen will be introducing free Wi-Fi to all of its public buildings in a bid to keep up with Glasgow and Edinburgh, which have both ramped up their Wi-Fi connectivity.

The money to fund the project has come from the Scottish Government’s £50 million Super Connected Cities Funding. It is expected that the funding will also help to bring Wi-Fi to more remote parts of Aberdeenshire.

According to news.stv.tv, a report published by Public Contracts Scotland said that the demand for digital connectivity in this region is increasing because of the vast growth in the local economy. Aberdeen holds international importance and is the commercial hub of the north east of Scotland.

The report said: “This will serve to widen access to internet based services across the city, bridge the digital divide and aid social inclusion. This service will offer visitors access to a world class Wi-Fi facility in all public accessible spaces.”
