Even more London boroughs will be gaining access to a free Wi-Fi service, as Arqiva plans to expand its portfolio in the capital even further.

According to v3.co.uk, the firm, who is already deploying Wi-Fi systems in Camden, Wandsworth, Hounslow, Islington and Hammersmith and Fulham, will be bringing internet access to four more boroughs. Tourists and residents in Barnet, Harrow, Haringey and Brent will soon be able to enjoy 30 minutes of free Wi-Fi a day. After the 30 minutes, users can choose to pay £5 to have access for the whole day. Those wanting to use the service more frequently can pay £30 a month instead, meaning they only pay around £1 a day for constant internet access.

Over the next 12 months, Arqiva is planning to fix 3G and 4G small-cell technologies to council-owned buildings and lampposts. This way, the firm will be able to ensure all the areas with high levels of footfall are covered.

It isn’t just London boroughs that are looking to provide free Wi-Fi to the masses though, as Arqiva will also be rolling out similar schemes in Southampton, Chatham, Gillingham and Rochester, reports techweekeurope.co.uk.

Nicolas Ott, managing director of telecoms at Arqiva, explained that the firm’s portfolio continues to grow.

“We are very happy to be working with an increasing number of local authorities and city centres to help them realise their digital ambitions with first-class Wi-Fi connectivity,” he stated. “Our Wi-Fi and small cells portfolio continues to go from strength to strength; over the past 15 months we have doubled the number of access points deployed.”
