The government of Karnataka has launched the first few Wi-Fi spots in Bangalore, ensuring free internet access is available to anyone in the city centre.

According to gizmocrave.com, the service is only currently available in six different Wi-Fi hotspots, but the government plans to roll out the service to ten more locations over the coming months. Eventually, there will be 23 different access points in total.

Bangalore is known as the state’s IT city and the provision of free Wi-Fi is set to increase that reputation, as it has become the first city in India to provide free Wi-Fi zones to its residents and visitors.

Currently, people can log onto the service on their laptop, smartphone or tablet device by accessing the hotspots located in Mahatma Gandhi Road, Brigade Road, Shanthi Nagar bus station, Yeshwantpur bus station, Koramangala bus station and CMH Road Indiranagar.

The service, which is provided by Namma Wi-Fi, can deliver speeds of up to 512kps. Users will be able to stay connected for a maximum of three hours per day, or until they use up the maximum data allowance of 50MB, reports telecomlead.com. Around 2,000 people can connect to the service at the same time.

Users will need to register their mobile number with the service to gain access to the free Wi-Fi. Once their number has been registered, the user will be sent an authentication password.
