Residents and visitors in Kakaako, Honolulu can now enjoy free Wi-Fi that’s ten times faster than the area’s typical home internet connection.

According to bizjournals.com, Kamehameha Schools is responsible for the network which spans across a nine-block area called Our Kaka’ako. The network has been designed by Hawaii Dialogix Telecom (HDT) and Boss Communication provides the electrical and cabling services. In total there are over 20 Wi-Fi hotspots located within the network’s area. These hotspots ensure that anyone using the network won’t lose their connection whilst travelling there.

Moreover, the public will know their safety and security is being protected, as there will be a next-generation firewall solution monitoring the network.

Erin Kinney, development manager for Kamehameha Schools, says the new network will benefit everyone.

“Our community Wi-Fi will not only increase wireless access for everyone who works and visits the neighbourhood, but it will further enhance the innovation and creativity that Our Kaka’ako is known for,” she states, reports kitv.com. “We’ll be able to strengthen our community in so many positive ways through greater connectivity.”

The network will be able to direct increased capacity to hotspots where – and when – footfall is higher. This will be useful during events such as the Honolulu Night Market, as it will ensure the internet connection isn’t slowed down when lots of people are connected to the same Wi-Fi hotspot.
