ScotRail announced yesterday (2nd August) that more than 130,000 users logged on to its free Wi-Fi network during August.

According to a press release on scotrail.co.uk, the Wi-Fi service is currently available on 41 trains and there are plans to install 18 more trains with the service by December.

The amount of passengers using the service has shot up since it was first installed in April this year. Only 2,343 users logged on within the first month but this was boosted to 38,446 in May and 73,435 in July. However this is the first month the service has reached a six-figure number of users, reports stv.tv.

Currently, passengers can access internet speeds of over 3Mbps on 72 per cent of the Edinburgh-Glasgow line and over 1Mbps on 89 per cent of the line.

However ScotRail plans to improve the service by upgrading the software, using 4G networks and installing measures which would block users accessing sites that take up a lot of bandwidth. All these upgrades will ensure the service is faster for everyone who uses it.

Managing director at ScotRail, Steve Montgomery, said: “It’s great to see such huge demand for the new Wi-Fi service. We’re determined to keep building upon this success and are using new software to help share bandwidth more fairly, giving users faster, more reliable connectivity.”
