The Office of Communications (Ofcom) has revealed that new satellite-based technology will soon be available on moving vehicles, such a trains, planes and boats, in a bid to increase connection speeds.

According to telegraph.co.uk, Phillip Marnick of Ofcom revealed that travellers will be able to benefit from superfast broadband connections, similar to the connections they have in their homes.

The regulatory body has just approved the use of ‘Earth station’ on moving vehicles, which supply an internet connection to passengers by linking to a geostationary satellite. Previous technology has limited Wi-Fi speeds in the past, but Earth stations will allow connection speed ten times faster than what is currently available on such vehicles.

“Earth stations will allow much faster data speeds, as Ofcom is making available a relatively large amount of high-frequency spectrum3 for their use,” Ofcom explained. “This will provide a considerable amount of data capacity.”

Ofcom stated that the first applications for Earth stations on ships will hopefully be submitted by February, with aircrafts following soon after. The new services could launch as early as the end of this year, reports v3.co.uk.

It also noted that it decided to approve the use of satellites on moving vehicles after realising that satellites for vehicle have come a long way technically speaking, meaning they are able to maintain a much more accurate signal than was previously possible.
