In-stadium Wi-Fi has become essential for all professional sports teams, it has been claimed.

Paul Kaputska, the editor-in-chief of Mobile Sports Report, has written a passionate blog about the subject claiming that NFL teams “need to put in Wi-Fi like they need to put in plumbing”.

Writing for his mobilesportsreport.com, he described Wi-Fi as a basic essential need for humans in this century, which would attract more fans to a game and could even become profitable in its own right.

Kaputska described the ability to view video replays and match statistics on a phone, or order concessions from the comfort of a seat as the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the possibilities that Wi-Fi could bring.

“We haven’t even started to talk yet about using Wi-Fi for improved internal operations, like public safety, ticketing or luxury suites. There’s money to be made on Wi-Fi networks, but first you have to built them,” he added.

The blog was written shortly after cnn.com revealed less than half of the teams competing in this season’s NFL have installed Wi-Fi.

It’s believed that many teams are waiting for the next generation of Wi-Fi technology to be unveiled before installing it in their stadiums.
