Nepal has announced its plans to make itself a free wi-fi zone in order to compete with its neighbours, India and China, which are two of the most technologically developed nations.

China currently dominates the global ICT hardware industry, while India is a world leader in software development. It is thought that making the entire country a wi-fi zone will go some way to closing this technological gap.

The announcement of the plans has come as a surprise as the country has a limited infrastructure and lacks the necessary resources for the development.

The Nepal Telecommunications Authority has been given a month to complete a feasibility study, on how it would go about implementing the plan. The taskforce also includes representatives from the Prime Minister’s office, the National Planning Commission, Ministry of Science and Technology and experts from Tribhuvan University.

According to economictimes.indiatimes.com, the panel will advise the government on how to go about funding the project and the technical requirement.

Whilst speaking to canindia.com, Umakant Parajuli, spokesperson at the MoIC, talking about the feasibility study said that the ministry would be coming to a decision as to whether the plan could go ahead or not, once the report had been completed and submitted.
