O2 has struck a deal with the Sherwood District Council to bring free public Wi-Fi to the market town of Newark, UK.

The mobile operator has reached an agreement to install Wi-Fi technology on the street furniture and buildings that line the town centre in January 2014.

According to an overview of the deal from computerworlduk.com, the installations will take place around Newark Castle, the Market Square and Appletongate. The connection will give local residents a way of browsing the web free of charge whilst Sherwood council also expects it to support activities such as retail promotion, tourism and provide information about the town centre’s facilities.

In finalising the deal, Newark will become one of the latest areas to receive a wireless connection from O2, which currently has over 9,000 active hotspots around the UK.

O2 will split the cost of the equipment, installation and maintenance with the council, who will appoint its own contractor to oversee any repairs for the connection.

Andrew Muter, chief executive of Newark & Sherwood District Council, told nottinghampost.com the deal represented a “fantastic achievement” for the town.

“Free Wi-Fi will be a great boost for the town centre and will support our efforts to bring more visitors into the district,” he added.
