The Wireless Broadband Alliance is excited to announce the launch of OpenRoaming Release 5 – a major leap forward in secure, automated, and privacy-enhanced connectivity.
This release brings key improvements for federation members, identity providers (IDPs), and access network providers (ANPs) looking to deliver high-quality, scalable wireless services.
Stronger Privacy & Identity Protection
Release 5 introduces short-lived credentials for IoT devices as well as enhanced privacy features, allowing user identities to remain anonymous and reducing long-term tracking risks which marks as an essential for both consumer and IoT use cases.
Trust Infrastructure Managed by WBA
Federation members benefit from direct access to a WBA-managed certificate infrastructure. Enhanced Broker APIs also simplify certificate management and integration with backend systems.
New Tools to Accelerate Deployment
Deployment just got easier with:
- Automated IDP Monitoring & Reporting via the OpenRoaming portal
- Updated configuration templates to reduce errors
- Enhanced diagnostic and troubleshooting resources to ensure faster onboarding
Standardization & Best Practices
OpenRoaming Release 5 includes a full suite of updated documentation:
- Revised identity certificate requirements
- Best practices for secure credential storage
- Defined IDP availability standards to ensure a consistent user experience
Global Network Visibility Enhancements
With the new OpenRoaming Coverage Map, users and operators can now view live deployments across the globe. The release also includes improvements to the public PKI repository for easier certificate-based authentication.

Security Enhancements & Automation
Security upgrades in Release 5 are extensive:
- Certificate Provisioning Statement for centralized issuance
- Automated alerts for certificate expiration
- Improved revocation handling to block unauthorized access
- Mandatory operator email in certificate Subject Alternative Name field for better traceability and troubleshooting
