Internet provider Comcast has launched a network made up of over 1,000 Wi-Fi spots in Utah, USA.
According to desertnews.com, Comcast’s Xfinity Internet customers will be able to connect to any of the hotspots completely free of charge.
People who aren’t customers can use the service too but they will be restricted to free access only twice a month for up to an hour each time until the 31st December. If they wish to use the service more frequently, they can purchase an hour’s use for $2.95 or gain access for a week for $19.95, reports sltrib.com.
The hotspots have been placed in popular areas, such as parks and shopping centres across Ogden, Salt Lake City, Provo and other cities. They have varying ranges of between 70 and 300 feet.
Comcast regional vice president Kyle McSlarrow said the hotspots are ideal for those who don’t want to use their mobile data to access internet on the go.
“People use the internet on the go all the time, but mobile data plans are increasingly limited and can be expensive,” he said. “With Xfinity WiFi, now our customers can save mobile phone data and get faster internet while they’re out and about.”
Comcast hopes to expand the service even further over the next few years.
