Over 19,000 people accessed the free Wi-Fi service at Lord’s cricket ground during England’s famous Ashes win, according to lords.org.

The Marylebone Cricket Club, the ground’s owner, struck a partnership with wireless internet provider The Cloud to launch Wi-Fi at the stadium over four days in July.

This granted a speedy service to spectators during the second test in the series, between July 18-21, which England won by 347 runs.

Figures from The Cloud show that over 19,000 separate devices used the connection over this four day period. These smartphones, tablets and laptops clocked up a total of 52,789 Wi-Fi sessions with the average browse lasting 64 minutes.

Cited by thecloud.net, Paul Long, who manages the MCC’s IT infrastructure, said the connection helped Lord’s cater for the modern cricket fan.

“In short, the rise in mobile device usage has meant our visitors are demanding different services from us – and to help them get the most out of their visit, we need to provide the tools to let them do this,” he commented.

Mr Long said typical activities inside the ground included uploading pictures or videos, tweeting, checking scores from elsewhere and following the match with live commentary.

After a successful trial, Mr Long says the MCC will continue to work with The Cloud in improving its wireless internet service.
