Owners of public Wi-Fi hotspots provided by Ruckus Wireless are to benefit from a series of new management tools akin to those available on cloud-based connections.
As reported by techworld.com, Ruckus joins the likes of Aerohive Networks, Cisco’s Meraki division and Hewlett Packard in putting Wi-Fi smarts in the cloud to improve the management of hotspots.
This move will certainly aid companies in the undertaking of certain management tasks, which would formerly be carried out via physical systems such as authentication servers and on-premises hardware controllers. Not only this, Ruckus believes that providing a management dashboard for customers to fine-tune their network settings will make it easier for hotspot owners to monetise their connections.
Pcworld.idg.com the features will include data collection for users and patterns of use as well as tools for placing adverts on users’ screens when they log on.
Ruckus is said to be targeting hotspot owners in highly congested areas where managing restrictions on browsing is a task in itself. Shopping malls to sports stadiums would be the company’s ideal targets, although smaller venues such as cafés may also benefit from being able to charge for access.
The new tools will be available within Ruckus’s SAMS (Smart Wi-Fi Access Management Service), which is set for a launch later on this week.
