More customers travelling in Scotland will soon be able to enjoy free Wi-Fi on their train journeys, as the service is being extended to even more trains and stations.
According to thecourier.co.uk, Wi-Fi access is already available at the 26 busiest railway stations in Scotland, but Transport Scotland says an additional 26 stations will be connected to the service by spring 2015. Troon, Bathgate and North Berwick stations are all included in the new update.
Passengers travelling on Class 170 trains can already check their emails and social media accounts on their journey. However, soon people aboard Class 158 and Class 380 trains will be able to do the same, as ScotRail are extending the service.
Transport minister, Keith Brown, says both relatively quiet and tourist-heavy stations will benefit from this facility.
“We want to ensure all passengers can get on with their busy lives while travelling, and that visitors to truly international events have a good experience of our rail networks,” he explains, reports scotsman.com.
“Scotland’s business community has made it clear that Wi-Fi access on commuter routes would boost competitiveness in Scotland and we are already well on the way to ensuring online access on all of our busiest commuter routes.”
ScotRail managing director Steve Montgomery adds that over a quarter of a million passengers use the free Wi-Fi service each month, so it’s important that the network remains up to date.
