The 30,000 daily commuters riding the Rapid Metro in Gurgaon, India, now have access to a free Wi-Fi service.

According to ndtv.com, the Wi-Fi service isn’t just available on the trains, it can also be accessed at four stations, including Induslnd Bank Cyber City, Micromax Moulsari Avenue and Sikanderpur.

The service, which is provided by MTS, will only remain free for six months. MTS hopes to provide similar services to other locations in India, such as educational institutes and other metro lines.

MTS India chief executive officer, Dmitry Shukov, comments on the service: “This one-of-its-kind service will enable commuters to access fast and consistent data speeds of up to 9.8mbps on MTS’ 3G plus network.”

Before rolling out the service, MTS commissioned a survey to find out how commuters feel about Wi-Fi provision. Over 95 per cent of respondents said they would like internet access whilst travelling on the Rapid Metro with passengers between the ages of 15 and 35 most keen.

Rapid Metro Gurgaen managing director and CEO, Sanjiv Rai, says the majority of commuters use their smartphones and tablets on their way to work and with the new Wi-Fi service, they will all have access internet which is fast and consistent, reports livemint.com.
