Virgin Media says it’s “delighted” to report that its Wi-Fi network for the London Underground came through the New Year’s Eve celebrations unscathed.

T3.com says Virgin’s connection was pushed to the limit as thousands of passengers logged on to spread their well wishes.

Virgin customers can get free Wi-Fi at any one of the capital’s 120 Underground stations, while non-members can sign up on packages ranging from £2 for a day to £15 for two months.

Figures from the company indicate that 600,000 tweets, Facebook posts, emails and web pages were shared over the night of December 30 and into the early hours of the following morning.

According to telecompaper.com, some of the biggest crowds of Wi-Fi users came from Oxford Circus, Waterloo and King’s Cross, as many people used the network to gain up-to-date travel information.

Traffic peaked at 1:04am when thousands of party-goers emerged from London’s pubs and bars to send New Year’s wishes to their loved ones.

Joe Lathan, Virgin Media’s director of broadband and home phone, said he was pleased that Virgin could help so many people connect with their friends and family on New Year’s.

“We’re delighted our Wi-Fi on London Underground service has become part of an unforgettable night in the capital as people celebrate an ‘Appy New Year!,” he jested.
