PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Trends and Opportunities

Private 5G network deployments are expected to ramp up significantly over the next few years in sectors like manufacturing (industrial IoT), enterprises, hospitality, healthcare, transportation and many more.

Wi-Fi is an incumbent technology in enterprises, and private 5G networks will be deployed along with Wi-Fi to meet wireless communication needs by leveraging capabilities and resources across both the networks.

With the expansion of OpenRoaming global, private 5G networks with OpenRoaming can provide new business opportunities to enterprises to enhance services and deliver new use cases with greater level of control and flexibility.

Business Benefits

The increasing availability of locally licensed spectrum is expected to trigger the accelerated adoption of private 5G systems by a wide variety of enterprises. This is even before key New Radio in unlicensed (NR-U) capability becomes available, offering the ability to operate a 5G network in purely license-exempt spectrum.

This project analyzes the opportunity for enhancing the OpenRoaming federation to address new private 5G opportunities and ensure OpenRoaming capabilities can be realized using  5G & LTE systems.

Expected Deliverables

  • Examine how to realize IR.88/NG.113 based roaming within the confines of the OpenRoaming federation.
  • Identify business opportunities and operational benefits and analyze how to adapt critical OpenRoaming capabilities to enable 5G support.
  • Evaluate and examine potential optimization of 5G in specific RCOIs and study how an equivalent set of policy capabilities can be realized using the 5G system.
  • Examine and provide recommendations on how to realize OpenRoaming federation-wide policies related to settlement, identity types, privacy and service level assurance under current legal baselines.
